issue 012: two of everything, please
Artful pairings of last week’s standout reads—photo books, painterly gems, sculptor deep-dives, and much more.
Last week’s biggest capital “A” art news was the exhibitor lineup announcement for Miami Art Basel. Some big names bowed out, and 41 new ones joined the party. Elsewhere on the fair circuit: Rencontres d’Arles opened, the Berlin Biennale underwhelmed, and Coloradans geared up for the Aspen Art Fair. Amy Sherald pulled out of her Smithsonian show after learning her transgender Statue of Liberty painting might be removed. Lastly, we lost an art world great.
There wasn’t a dominant throughline this week, so instead of a big theme, I went with small pairings and light commentary. And I encourage you to do the same. Click through as many as catch your eye, and just let yourself skim and enjoy the images. But if you read one piece, make it the Mosely interview toward the end—it’s a quiet stunner.
2 Esoteric Photo Books
ASX always delivers cerebral reads. Their pairing of literature and photography is artful and subtle—I always find myself rereading them to fully appreciate the meanings behind the connections.
2 Lost Artists, Remembered
New shows remember two artists who both passed in the 2010s. Although their practices were very different, they both found ways to push the boundaries within their mediums.
2 Clever Listicles
I usually stay away from listicles in favor of single-artist or single-show coverage, but these are worth the read (or skim—that’s what listicles are great for!)
2 Photographers Capturing Place
On opposite ends of the earth, Alick Phiri in Zambia and Ayda Gragossian in Los Angeles remind us to slow down and look around.
2 Party Photo Series
These nostalgic snapshots from NYC and London are time machines in leather jackets. You can almost feel the sweaty, sticky nights and looming hangovers.
2 Painting Reviews
Two Coats of Paint and Whitehot Magazine always deliver with thoughtful reviews of under-the-radar shows. These are no different.
2 Masters, Revisited
We love old icons. One’s a pointillist masterpiece given a fresh look, the other a full fall season of under-seen works at the Morgan.
2 New Art Documentaries
Swap your summer TV binge (embarrassingly, I’m halfway through a SATC rewatch) for these artful streams.
2 Sculptor Interviews
These artists work in wildly different materials—but both reflect on how space, influence, and institutional backing shape their practices.

Happy skimming!
‘til next time,

P.S. I did get my wish for some art world “Coldplaygate” memes.
